Fair share – for thee but not me

President Obama’s decision to send Michelle and his daughters to Hawaii ahead of him if he is delayed by a fight with Congress could cost taxpayers tens of thousands of extra dollars to fund two separate vacation flights and related costs. The move would also violate the intent of an executive order he issued just last month urging federal employees to cut back on expenses like travel.

Sec. 3. Travel. (a) Agency travel is important to the effective functioning of Government and certain activities can be performed only by traveling to a different location. However, to ensure efficient travel spending, agencies are encouraged to devise strategic alternatives to Government travel, including local or technological alternatives, such as teleconferencing and video conferencing. Agencies should make all appropriate efforts to conduct business and host or sponsor conferences in space controlled by the Federal Government, wherever practicable and cost effective. Lastly, each agency should review its policies associated with domestic civilian permanent change of duty station travel (relocations), including eligibility rules, to identify ways to reduce costs and ensure appropriate controls are in place.

Seems obama has forgotten about his two gigantic $2 million buses that he has flown to his appearances

Sec. 6. Executive Fleet Efficiencies. The President’s Memorandum of May 24, 2011 (Federal Fleet Performance) directed agencies to improve the performance of the Federal fleet of motor vehicles by increasing the use of vehicle technologies, optimizing fleet size, and improving agency fleet management. Building upon this effort, agencies should limit executive transportation.

Sec. 7. Extraneous Promotional Items. Agencies should limit the purchase of promotional items (e.g., plaques, clothing, and commemorative items), in particular where they are not cost-effective.

The U.S. Department of State forked over $70,000 to buy Obama’s best-selling book “Dreams From My Father,” The Washington Times reported , noting that if Obama earned 10 percent of the purchase, he pocketed several thousand dollars.

    Conservatives: Be Very Afraid

by Keith Koffler on December 8, 2011, 7:48 am

That’s the title of a piece I wrote that is running this morning in Politico.

Why be afraid? Because Obama in his speech Tuesday in Kansas revealed that he is going to campaign as a liberal – no more unifying hope and change nonsense – in order to gain a mandate to govern as a liberal. And then he will put us on a road to statism from which we may never return.

    This was as of August:
So far, President Obama has taken 61 vacation days after 31 months in office. At this point in their presidencies, George W. Bush had spent 180 days at his ranch where his staff often joined him for meetings. And Ronald Reagan had taken 112 vacation days at his ranch.
Among recent presidents, Bill Clinton took the least time off — 28 days.
Despite White House spokesman Bill Burton’s suggestion that the Obamas are being harassed with unprecedented attack for their recent leisure travels, this is
nothing new. As Kenneth Walsh says, criticizing the president’s cottage destination has become a cottage industry in D.C.: “No matter who is the president, the opposition party delights in criticizing him for taking time off, billing it as insensitive to the problems of struggling Americans, demonstrating aristocratic excess, or betraying some hedonistic character flaw.” The only thing new are the creative methods of finding fault with taking time off. Presidents pay for their vacations themselves – as they pay for their own food in the white house. This is ho-hum stuff and nothing new. Bush spent the entire month of August “clearing brush” on his ranch. I have to say the other side is always trying to stir up a controversy where there is none. The President is connected at all times to what is going on and he deserves a vacation as much as everyone else on the planet that can afford one as well.

Three points are important here. First, FDR, as a progressive, believed with his cousin Teddy that “swollen fortunes” needed to be taxed at punitive rates to redistribute wealth. In fact, as we can see, redistributing wealth was more important to FDR than increasing it. FDR was the first U. S. president to take redistribution that far.

Second, high taxes on the rich provided excellent cover for his having made the income tax a mass tax. How could a steelworker in Pittsburgh, for example, refuse to pay a new 24 percent tax when his rich factory owner had to pay more than 90 percent?

Third, and possibly most important, class warfare was the major campaign strategy for FDR during his whole presidency. He believed he won votes when he attacked the rich, or they attacked him, and he discussed that with Ray Moley, his speechwriter, and later with Henry Morgenthau, his secretary of the treasury. During the 1936 campaign, when FDR still had double-digit unemployment, he used the rich again and again as scapegoats. Two weeks before the election, FDR announced that wealthy people had long been refusing “to pay a fair share” of the cost of government. Therefore, he boasted, “we increased still further the taxes paid by individuals in the highest brackets–those with incomes over one million dollars a year. Wasn’t that the American thing to do?” Later, when those millionaires sheltered their income to escape the high new rates, Roosevelt publicly denounced them for “tax avoidance” and for not paying their “fair share.” In 1937, perhaps thinking of his next reelection campaign, he told two prominent Democrats, Senator Pat Harrison and Rep. Robert Doughton, that if they would form a “subcommittee to investigate tax avoidance,” that the Democrats would gain “at least 10,000,000 [votes]” by publicly exposing those who sheltered income.

Republicans put “party over country,” Obama said during an October 6, 2011 press conference. “Millionaires and billionaires…have lower tax rates in some cases than plumbers and teachers.” True, capital gains taxes at 15 percent are lower than income taxes for some middle-class Americans, but that is because the capital gains tax is, in a real sense, a second tax on top of the income tax. All cash invested toward capital gains has already been shrunk by the income tax (and possibly the corporate tax as well). But census data reveal that the top 1 percent of income earners pay 38 percent of the federal income tax; and the bottom 50 percent shoulder less than 2 percent of that total tax burden–which is not a statistic shared by the president. Instead, Obama promotes his new surtax on millionaires, thus “making our tax system fair and just and promoting growth.”

      • Kim
        Dec 08, 2011 @ 09:53:16

Those who thrive on class warfare, like FDR and Obama, seem to have insurmountable advantages. They can divide America, demonize the rich, and fish for votes among the middle-class and poor. But, as FDR and Obama have discovered, when you penalize the rich, they shelter their wealth, or take it elsewhere. That makes an already depressed economy even more stagnant. Ronald Reagan, by contrast, slashed tax rates on incomes and corporations, and then watched as unemployment and inflation plummeted. The U.S. dramatically expanded its industrial hegemony in the world. Along the way, Reagan carried 49 of 50 states when he ran for reelection. What’s more, when the economy opened up, the poor really did get something from the rich–computers, iPhones, Garmins, the Internet, and flat-screen TVs, for starters. That beats the WPA, the OPA, cash for clunkers, and Obamacare. And it gives those who believe in freedom hope that the votes for President Obama will be redistributed in 2012.

That money would be Mexican drug cartel money all sparkly clean thanks to – wait for it – the DEA. Yes, the DEA, under Holder, has laundered millions – MILLIONS – of dollars for the Mexican drug cartels.

How in the hell is Holder, and every single one of the administrators who went along with this, not indicted and facing trial? I’m no attorney, but I am fairly certain that money laundering is ILLEGAL, especially for the head of the US Justice Department.

As you might suspect, this is all part and parcel of the horrendously stupid “Fast and Furious” gun-walking program. Rep. Darrell Issa is doing his best to uncover the extent of this program under Holder

“Apparently, this same goal of dismantling Mexican drug cartels motivated the Drug Enforcement Administration in aiding and abetting these same cartels in laundering millions of dollars in cash,” Issa continued. “In fact, The New York Times reports that agents needed to seek Department approval to launder amounts greater than $10 million in any single operation.”

At least five Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now leaders have visited the White House this year alone. One of those ACORN officials has been involved in vetting Department of Justice hires who may help to enforce the voter fraud-enabling National Voting Rights Act (NVRA), also known as the Motor-Voter law. The Department has come under fire for refusing to enforce Section 8, which requires states to remove the names of ineligible felons, the dead, and non-residents from voter rolls, while zealously enforcing Section 7, which requires states to register voters at welfare offices.

Project Vote’s official position is that voter fraud is a myth invented by Republicans to disenfranchise Democratic voters. The group vilifies as a racist anyone who thinks voter ID requirements are a good idea and constantly presses to make voting requirements even more lax than they now are.

Rogers has been working with the Obama administration before it took office on Jan. 20, 2009. She filed what Project Vote called a “voting rights agenda” submission with the Obama-Biden presidential transition team in 2008.

It is now becoming clear what that agenda consists of. Project Vote and allied groups have filed a rash of lawsuits recently in several states in an attempt to pressure state officials into backing off investigations into voter fraud allegations, Kevin Mooney reported last week.

“The lawsuits are coming out of nowhere in multiple states and they are coming fast,” said Anita MonCrief, a former Project Vote employee who has testified in court against Project Vote and ACORN. “This is part of a coordinated effort,” said MonCrief. “These groups are very well-funded, and they have lawyers doing pro bono work.”

The Osawatomie speech happened not because in his arrogant head he’s ‘King of the Global World’ and not because he can now sniff the blood on what the Dems envision as the coming bloodbath of Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich.

The Osawatomie speech happened because the ‘Time of Obama the Marxist’ is here. Axelrod astroturf is telling him the time of his constituency is right. Like panting panthers Occupy Wall Street (OWS) await the right moment in campaign time to provide the street theatre that will dominate the mainstream media news right up to Election Day. Moves are already afoot by OWS to infiltrate the Tea Party Movement and render it useless.
”Now Barack, if I may call you that, what is your obsession with big government, massive deficits, huge bureaucracies, endless regulations, confiscatory taxes, what is it about that that turns you on? None of what you love, sir, creates wealth or jobs. Where has such an economic system ever worked? Where has what you love and adore ever succeeded? You say, sir, you want a more activist government. What does that mean? We’re about five steps away from the financial cliff’s edge, thanks to you, thanks to the government, the incompetent ideologues who run it like you. What else would you like to spend money on? What else would you like to regulate? What else do you want to demonize? What else do you want to cut down to size? What else do you want to destroy? What else would you like to ban? What else in America do you want to smother and obstruct?

Even as a fawning mainstream media was cheering the True Birth of Barack Hussein Obama the Marxist and GOP was admonishing conservatives not to criticize the newborn babe swaddled in Socialism, Limbaugh denounced the Osawatomie speech for what it was:

“The speech you gave yesterday, sir, was idiotic, shameful, actionable, incoherent, and alien to American ideals and principles. And above all else, it was pure pathetic. But as my cohort here, Mr. Snerdley, says, Barack, if I may call you that, you did the nation a great favor. You told every patriotic American-loving citizen that your view of America is not shared by them. You finally told us that after three years the cat’s out of the bag. After three years everybody know knows why I wanted you to fail. Everybody that heard that speech now knows that you said America as founded has never worked. You have outed yourself, Barack, if I may call you that. You’ve come out. Maybe you’ll be on the cover of the next Advocate, because you just outed yourself, sir. You have nothing but contempt for this country. You told us yesterday you have nothing but contempt for our economic and political system. You told us yesterday.

“So now, as my cohort and subservient employee Mr. Snerdley has observed, even the least attentive citizen knows where you stand, even the Kardashians know. And that’s a big achievement, folks. To penetrate the wall of stupidity surrounding that family, even Paris Hilton; even Alec Baldwin is so ticked off he gets thrown off an American Airlines flight, Barack. Thank you. Norman Lear is beside himself. So is Barbra Streisand. You gave it up. There’s nowhere for your supporters to hide. They can’t say you have a vision as a great American. You’re something else. Your vision for this country is not rooted in any, not one, American tradition. Your vision for the future of this country is not rooted in one single aspect of American greatness. That is what you seek to destroy. Even the least attentive citizens, even if they are only halfwits, now know to vote against you.”…

Obama’s latest speech showed him for exactly what and who he is. Not as an incompetent, golf-playing fool, but a Marxist whose mission it is to destroy what so many others love.

What should worry everyone is this Occupy Wall Street Movement is that it is a communist front. It is backed by the Communist Labor Unions, SEIU, and AFL-CIO. If it goes on until next August or September it will turn violent and Comrade Obama will suspend the National elections. Alex Jones on his website infowars.com had a post that a Halliburton was looking to contract out some labor contracts about the Fema Camps. Yes, they are real. Everyone should be worried about this bill that was just passed giving the military the right to detain anyone for as long as they want to.. Strange this is all happening under Comrade Obama and about year before the elections.

Here is an 8 page list of Obamas accomplishments in office:
hardly what I would call doing nothing in office which is completely untrue.
On the other hand here is a list of the dismantling of everything he could possible undo by President Bush and this was just in his first year:

I didnt realize people were still worried about “the communists” as if they even exist
It didnt work with McCarthyism in the 1950’s and this ridiculous idea that OCW
is a communist front is just stupid. I mean they are hardly a cohesive group and
there were many people including people who follow the Tea Party out there protesting with a lot of different reasons for doing so. Its NOT class warfare
and anyone who says it is doesnt understand the movement. Its about playing fair and a level playing field. Most people in this country supported the Occupy Wall Street protests.

As to voter fraud – we know the object of redistricting that the GOP is trying is to make it harder for people, especially people of color and hispanics to vote.
It is voter suppression and it threatens the very core of Democracy. Not allowing early voting, having less voting places for Democrats than republicans, and other methods of suppression will go on in 2012 for sure. Again, typical of the right
as they have a fascist mindset about how to take care of the “undesirables”
they dont want to vote especially if they are not voting for them.

Im interested in why you call Michele Obama a mooch -why? All Presidents wives travel – to Europe Asia Africa – everywhere. Mrs Bush took her two daughters on many trips – Hillary took Chelsea on a big African safari when she was first lady.
Whats your beef with Michele exactly? I mean its obvious you dont like her, I get it,but as ALL first ladies have traveled abroad with their children and without what exactly have you got against her?

You can quote from the slanted right wing websites all day long but it doesnt make it true. I know how divided this country is – we are a microcosm of what is happening to Americans. I never remember my parents arguing about politics in this manner in the 50’s – I never knew what our neighbors were politically. I knew that there were going to be ramifications if Obama was elected I just didnt think it would be this bad.

    an aside regarding Corzine

    from someone who should know

Let me cut through the Bee Ess for you . . .
Posted by Ann Barnhardt – December 8, AD 2011 11:15 AM MST
The Congressional Ag Committee keeps asking about what are appropriate investment vehicles for FCMs to park customer seg funds. And there is all kinds of bee ess being bandied about. Let’s cut through this and answer the damn question.

UNITED STATES TREASURY PAPER, with the specific Treasury product being:

    90 DAY T-BILLS.

This is the decades-long convention, it is COMMON KNOWLEDGE, and it is JUST COMMON SENSE. The entire interest dynamic for FCMs and IB’s was based on one metric and one metric only: 90 DAY T-BILL RATES.

I don’t give a CRAP how low interest rates are, and how much revenue has been lost to FCMs due to low rates of return on Treasury paper over the last 3-4 years. IT IS IMMORAL TO EXPOSE CUSTOMER SEG FUNDS TO ANYTHING MORE RISKY THAN THE EXTREMELY LOW-RISK U.S. T-BILL MARKET.

As an IIB, I wasn’t making any interest return on my posted escrow capital that I had to carry with my FCM over the last two years. When I first started BCM in 2006, the 90-Day T-Bill yield I was earning on just my escrow accounts paid my entire quote system expense. When the Fed synthetically suppressed interest rates down to next-to-nothing, that revenue to me went away. So . . . does that mean that I then was allowed to trade illegally in my customers’ accounts and gin up fraudulent commissions in order to make up for that loss of revenue?

HELL NO. My loss of interest income was MY PROBLEM, not my customers’ problem. And in the same way, the FCM’s loss of interest income did NOT give them the right to raid customer seg funds and “invest” those funds in uber-leveraged, uber-risky bets.

One last point: REMEMBER, if the bets that Corzine made with the customer seg funds had actually “worked” and paid off, the CUSTOMERS WOULD NOT HAVE RECEIVED OR SHARED IN ONE RED CENT OF THAT PROFIT. That profit would have been kept in total by the FCM, and the customers would have never known that THEIR SEGREGATED FUNDS were the funds used to make those bets. The psychopath Corzine was willing to make the uber-risky, suicidally leveraged bets because HE WAS PLAYING WITH OTHER PEOPLE’S MONEY.

90-Day U.S. T-Bills always have been and always will be the ONLY acceptable investment vehicle for customer seg funds in an FCM.

Oh, and Jon Corzine is a miserable liar and a sociopath who should spend the rest of his life in prison.

Here is the real record of cutting taxes and regulation: The U.S. economy grew at an average pace of 3.3 percent from 1983-2007, inflation—the scourge of the 1970s—was slayed, and the stock market rose by 1,400 percent. Median middle-class incomes rose by roughly 50 percent. (These numbers are even more impressive when you recall that heading into the 1980s, experts were predicting a dystopian, Solyent Greenesque, Age of Limits future for America.) Obama would be lucky to fail like this.

Wages, household earnings and earnings of tax units appear to grow slowly. Between 1970-2008 real wages grew 15%, median household income 16%, and according to Pickety&Saez taxable income of “The Bottom 99 Percent” by 12%.

This contrasts with another more reliable and complete measure. Between 1970-2008 Real Per Capita GDP increased by 108%, based on National Accounts data calculated by the Bureau of Economic Analysis.

As Obama called for passage of those bills, he also responded to a recent Republican push to require him to approve the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline from Canada. “However many jobs might be generated by a Keystone pipeline,” he said, “they’re going to be a lot fewer than the jobs that are created by extending the payroll tax cut and extending unemployment insurance.”

New Jersey threatened to suspend a HS student in charge of a “holiday assembly” because he violated the “no Jesus, no Christmas, no SANTA!” rules. After student wrote an OP-ED published by Huff-Po, they backpedaled.

Fort Worth, Texas socialist indoctrination centers, I mean, public schools district, not only eliminated any “blatant” religious references like Christmas, Jesus, Yule, Hanukkah, Menorah, Dreidel, Holly King, etc. But they removed ALL replicas of Frosty, Rudolph, and Santa first claiming “religious undertones”, then “too distracting”.

A California school has followed suit.

And I have heard rumors of the same in Denver.

I love Jan Brewer. I don’t always agree with her, and her voice can get on your nerves. But I love her. Over the past couple of years she has issued an executive order that, in Arizona, it is a Christmas Tree if on public property. She also has announced that Druids are more than free to have “Yule Trees”. She welcomes Jewish children to have dreidels and menorahs in schools as well. See, she gets it.

    What is “it”?

“It” is the religion clause of the First Amendment.

First, Congress nor any state government (or duly elected official) may impose a state religion. That means, that the government cannot declare any faith or sect thereof to be the “one true faith” of the people. Sorry, kids, but we are NOT a “Christian” nation. Our Constitution, the Federalist Papers, and the Declaration are very clear in recognizing there is at least one deity. There are several names for it. End of discussion. But they will not tell you that you must worship that deity in any certain way, faith, or creed. Call him “YHVH”, “Jesus”, “Odin”, “Jehovah”, or “Bob”. You are even free to not believe. No laws can force you.

The second part of that clause is that the right to worship “shall not be infringed”. That means THEY CANNOT STOP YOU! If your kid wants to say a few words to Taranis or Thor in between lessons at school, he has the right to. If the government school says “no”, they are in violation. (Private schools are a different story. You have a contract with them.) If you daughter wants to sing “Aleinu Shalom” and hug her friends in peace at recess, she has the RIGHT to do so. The government schools cannot legally stop her. If Abu Ali wants to genuflect in the city park at noon… yeah, we have to let him.

Call him “YHVH”, “Jesus”, “Odin”, “Jehovah”, or “Bob”. You are even free to not believe. No laws can force you.

YESSS!!! It is so hard to get Christians to understand this! We are not a theocracy. Our foundation is Judeo-Christian in its laws and it is the Roman Senate model that our government takes after, building on that foundation. Though I believe that the God that the Founding Fathers referenced “In the Year of Our Lord” is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, it was still just fine with the Founders for athiests and other religions to seek refuge in the New Nation.

Obama pays for all his family and all Presidents pay for their own vacations
Air Force one can take one person or ten so what? The plane goes regardless – its just the same old BS as you say, complaining about non issues just to fan the fire a little more. If you were in her position you would do the same thing – as so many other Presidents families have done in the past. This thing about religion again is also a non-issue. Where does it stop? No religion in school period. If they want to have a class on it fine but there is no end to what people can believe – christians dont agree -The evangelicals call Mormonism a cult – one protestant group derides another – and all the evangelicals dont like the Catholics. Which bible to use – the king James or the new american bible? Enough all ready – leave it out and keep it out. Teach your children about religion in your home your own way. Perhaps you might not want them making the sign of the cross as the catholics and greek orthodox do who is to decide these things – the teachers?
As far as Christmas Trees being called Christmas trees thats ridiculous as that is what they are and again, some common sense would be nice to call a spade a spade and not dance around it. I dont agree with not having the symbols of the season but again, other groups will also want their symbols up too – where does it end? The white house is decorated beautifully at christmas – it has this years theme Shine Give Share – and is honoring our troops especially those who have lost loved ones. And they are Christmas Trees – not holiday trees. We cant be responsible for every elected official having common sense. There should be a little more respect between people and we should have a little more respect for the Presidency as I believe he is trying to represent us all and its a tough job to do. This horrible lynching by the right has to stop. The history books will write about the GOP and how they have tried to destroy this man.
Yes and I dont call myself a liberal and a progressive – I am one. But I try to give a point of view without the venom that I find on so many right blogs.

I apologize for seeming venomous, Theou. I promise to do better

It has been a stressful week for me and next week I have taken for myself. Hopefully some rest and relaxation will bring me back to my center.
